What is a DPF?

Introduced by emissions legislation in 2009, the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a component that captures and stores exhaust soot to help reduce the emissions on diesel vehicles. There is a limit to how much soot can be stored in the DPF, therefore it periodically has to be ‘burnt off’, this is known as a regeneration.

What causes a DPF blockage?

Shorter journeys and ‘around town type’ driving, is a primary cause of DPF blockage. In some cases, we can use diagnostic equipment to encourage the DPF to regenerate, but once it reaches a certain stage it is necessary to have a thorough chemical clean.

How do I know if my DPF is blocked?

Typically, you will get a warning light if the DPF is blocked, sometimes resulting in reduced power (also known as Limp Home Mode).
